Boys Do Not Watch BL: Abjection towards Indonesian BL Fanboys

Abstract
This research aims to investigate the practice of abjection experienced by fanboys of Thai boys' love in the Indonesian context. Julia Kristeva's concept of abjection, along with Richard Dyer's stereotype theory, is elaborated upon to critically explore the experiences of othering and abjection among Indonesian Boys' Love fanboys. The qualitative research method involved conducting in-depth interviews with four males who are part of the Thai enthusiast community (Thaienthu) based in Yogyakarta. The results show that the participants admitted they often received verbal abuse specifically targeting their sexual orientation. Stereotypes of nonheteronormativity are still the most common labels associated with these BL fanboys. However, in facing the abjection practiced by the heteronormative society surrounding them, they have created their own space and engaged in exclusive queer desire and fantasy. They also withdraw from society and challenge the stereotypes imposed on them, serving as acts of resistance against the rejection they experience as men who watch Boys Love series.
