Abstract
One of the biggest problems related to the environmental issues, faced by people today, is the accumulation of plastic waste that cannot be decomposed natural like synthetic clothing. Recycling is the common solution to degrade plastic usage. Batik fabric leftover, for instance, can be reproduced as a new product. In the same way, the design focuses on a pillow production using patchwork from textile industry or clothing waste. The utilization of the patchwork will provide some benefits such as creating environmentally friendly product and contributing to provide idea for product design by developing the production of textile waste. This design applies descriptive qualitative method based on library research. In addition, this design also divided into two processes namely, advance patchwork observation and design process experiment. The steps include studying the potential and the problems related to finding material, design inspiration, production and the product result. Moreover, there are two techniques applied in this design, involving patchwork techniques and quilting. The pillow uses square stitch geometric pattern that are measured and sewn up based on the design. To engage public opinion, the researcher also done the survey toward 10 people of 19 to 20 years old about their review of the patchwork pillow product. The survey shows that 8 out of 10 respondents are interested to use this product.
